Dr. Leon Goldsmith
Leon Goldsmith is a political scientist, author, and geopolitical analyst specialising in Levant and Gulf affairs. He holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at the University of Otago, serves on the advisory boards of several international academic institutions, and is the founder and director of Middle East and Islamic Studies Aotearoa (MEISA).
His book Cycle of Fear: Syria's Alawites in War and Peace (Hurst, 2015) remains a definitive study of Syrian sectarian politics. His analysis of post-Assad Syria's transition has been presented at international conferences and sought by leading policy institutions.
Leon lived and worked in Oman for nearly seven years, including a founding faculty role at Sultan Qaboos University, and has maintained sustained research and advisory engagement across the Gulf and Levant ever since. He is permanently based in Bangkok, Thailand, in partnership with Sinchai Gold Limited.
